Position:      Communications Specialist

The US Coalition for Child Survival is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Communications Specialist to be filled immediately. The Communications Specialist serves as a key resource to enhance communication strategies and activities in support of Coalition events. This person will report to the Executive Director and serve as a member of the Coalition team.

Our office is located at the Ballston, Virginia metro stop (orange line).

Responsibilities/Duties

•  Manage the preparation and implementation of all Coalition communication activities, including preparation of fact sheets, publications, press releases, press briefings, op-ed articles, letters to the editor, etc

•  Actively participate in defining USCCS’ mission, vision and identity as well as the strategy to achieve the Coalition’s work plans

•  Actively participate in outside activities that will increase the profile of USCCS’ work and disseminate USCCS’ messages

•  Prepare communication strategies and activities to support Coalition events

•  Provide day-to-day management and coordination of communication activities

•  Develop content for the Coalition’s Web site

•  Contribute content for project newsletters in both electronic and print formats

•  Provide training to Coalition members on media relations and work to increase media coverage and attention for child survival

•  Help develop a program to enlist the support of businesses and corporations to help the Coalition expand and enhance its mission through a corporate council, policy roundtables, and the support of overseas missions to developing countries

•  Assist in overall advocacy and education to legislators on Capitol Hill, the Executive Branch, and U.S. government agencies involved with foreign assistance

•  Perform other duties as may be assigned


Qualifications/Requirements

•  Masters degree in public health, education, communication, public policy, international development or related field and 8-10 years of relevant experience

•  Excellent writing and editing skills for a variety of mediums

•  Excellent interpersonal and public communication skills

•  Exceptional organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously

•  Experience in work that relates to government relations, particularly engaging the U.S. Congress and the Executive Branch

•  Experience in international development and global health, familiarity with maternal, newborn, and child health issues preferred; knowledge of international programs, strategies, donors and organizations

•  Team-focused with the ability to network and facilitate strong working relationships between partners

•  Understanding of knowledge management and experience adopting, adapting, and applying knowledge to communicate more effectively

•  Experience developing databases helpful

•  Ability to work both independently and as part of a team

•  Experience in organizing and implementing events and programs

•  Fluency in English required
